DHAKA, Nov 3, 2014  - Eminent citizens of the country today expressed their satisfaction over upholding of death sentence of Muhammad Kamaruzzaman, assistant secretary-general of Jamaat-e-Islami.

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today upheld the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 verdict sentencing death to Jamaat leader Kamaruzzaman for committing crimes against humanity during the War of Liberation.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division (AD) headed by Justice SK Sinha delivered the verdict around 9.10 in the morning. Three other judges of the bench are Justice Md Abdul Wahhab Miah, Justice Hasan Foez Siddique and Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury.

Just after the verdict one of the prosecutors of ICT Tureen Afroz expressed her satisfaction and said "the verdict is a victory of spirit of Muktijuddha. It's a victory of history of mankind. This verdict will be a milestone in establishing justice and rule of law. It will be marked as another step of freeing the nation from culture of impunity."

Eminent cultural activists Nasiruddin Yusuf Bacchu said souls of Liberation War martyrs will get peace through the verdict. This is a right verdict against war criminal like Kamaruzzaman who was involved in crimes like killing, rape and looting during the War of Liberation.

"Bangladesh is a civilized country. We waited a long for getting such kind of verdict. At last we got justice," he said.
